Hastelloy S is a wrought nickel base alloy noted for retaining good hot strength and ductility for long term cyclic or continuous high temperature use.
Applications: Gas turbines for parts that are subjected to cyclical heating.
Machinability: The alloy is machinable but requires rigid tooling to avoid chatter and excessive work hardening.
Forming: Good ductility in the as supplied condition means the alloy can be readily formed by conventional means.
Welding: May be welded in the as supplied condition by manual or automatic methods including TIG and MIG welding. Matching filler metal should be used and pre or post heating are not required.
Heat Treatment: Solution annealed at 1950 F followed by air cooling.
Forging: Forging is done in t he temperature range of 2100 F to 1600 F. Final forging reduction should be confined to the temperature range of 1900 F to 1500 F.
Hot Working: May be done within the temperature ranges given for “Forging”.
Cold Working: May be readily cold worked — see comments under “Forming”.
Annealing: Solution annealed at 1950 F followed by air cool.
Aging: Aging has very little effect on the mechanical properties. The alloy retains strength and ductility even after prolonged exposure at temperatures from 1000 F to 1600 F.
Hardening: Hardened by cold working only.
